All 130 Guest Rooms Feature Video Art by Meredith James

We are thrilled to present Meredith James, our featured video artist whose work will be viewable in all 130 guest rooms on Chanel 36, The Roger Smith Hotel’s in-house TV channel.

James, with a background that straddles costume design and woodwork, makes both extraordinary full size and miniature sets in her Brooklyn studio. She then uses them to create surreal, paradoxical videos that play with scale and perspective, using optical tricks and illusion intended to fool the eye and boggle the mind.

“I look for ways to collapse the real world of the viewer into the fictional world of my videos. In Day Shift, I reshoot part of the video (the security guard walking from her office to her car) on location at The Roger Smith Hotel, thus anchoring the video in the viewer’s immediate surroundings.” Say’s James.

To accompany Day Shift 2009/13, we will also be showing a mini doc of the studio visit we did with Meredith James in early September. This video will also be available here, soon!

Meredith James received her BA from Harvard University and her MFA in sculpture from the Yale School of Art. Her work has been shown at Marc Jancou Contemporary, LaMontagne Gallery, Interstate Projects, LAXArt, NurtureArt, David Castillo Gallery, The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, Newman Popiashvili, The Graduate Center at CUNY, and Rivington Arms.  She has received fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, Lighthouse Works, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and Sculpture Space and she attended Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in 2011.  She is currently an artist-in-residence at Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side.
