For some, a quintessential trip to New York City conjures up the image of a brightly lit Times Square, the taste of an overly salted pretzel and the never ending horns of impatient drivers. For others, the perfect trip to New York revolves around the fringe of the hustle and bustle.

In the city that never sleeps, there is a place that allows you to escape from the sensory overload that is Manhattan. That place is Central Park. For Roger Smith Management Trainee Mankaran Kumar, the ideal New York experience is a day in Central Park.

Take a Walk

Central Park is just a short walk from Roger Smith, and although Mankaran could hail a cab or take the subway, he prefers to walk. By doing so, he feels as though he’s finally gotten a grasp on the city.

Mankaran: “When I walk on the streets now, I can tell if someone’s a New Yorker based on their speed.”

Go Ice Skating at Wollman Rink

Growing up in Malaysia, Mankaran seldom had the chance to experience cold-weather activities to which native New Yorkers are accustomed. He recommends ice skating at Wollman Rink for any winter enthusiast visiting Manhattan, as well as for those looking for a momentary escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

At Wollman Rink, talented skaters do laps around the inexperienced, but there’s no animosity at this rink; everybody comes here for a good time.

Grab a New York Snack

After an afternoon in Central Park, Mankaran grabs a classic New York snack, a pretzel, from a stand in Central Park. When asked about the best part of living in New York, Mankaran surprisingly responds, “Seamless”.

Mankaran:  “I love Seamless. Every day I get something new. New york is crazy; I was so isolated when I was going to hospitality school in Switzerland.  Now there is so much happening, all the time. I want to see everything in New York.”
