The Roger Smith is delighted to present a collection of paintings by Ayline Olukman, in collaboration with the Lower East Side Gallery, Massey Klein. The work will be on show in the hotel’s lobby, May 8-August 5, 2019.
I have always felt a sense of displacement and a desire to understand my own identity as a woman and artist. My paintings, photographs and collages reflect this quest tinged by desire, nostalgia and wandering.
I travel a lot, often alone, to places in the world that inspire me for their beauties or myths. The link I maintain with nature is a link of initiation. The elements are present in my pictures: clouds, sky, rivers, sea and roads but I also look to the things I have collected along the way during my travels: random objects such as shells, skulls or rocks – objects that I then impose my own symbolism upon. When placing these items together in my work, a new visual language is created that references the lineage of still life throughout the history of painting.
