Vermont Studio Center Fellowship – Winner Announcement

We are proud to announce the Roger Smith Artist Fellowship has been awarded to Megan Kalinowski.

The fellowship was open to applications from visual artists based in the New York Metro Area, and includes a month-long residency at the Vermont Studio Center plus an exhibition in the Lobby at the Roger Smith Hotel in Fall 2017.

Meg Kalinowski is an architectural designer and artist based in New York City.  Her practice addresses the split between selves- split as women, architect, artist; between the sleeping and waking mind- the well of memory, both true and fabricated; the implications of trauma and release.  She works across sculpture, drawing, painting and digital art to distill correlations between the temporality of place and self, in hopes to capture a more comprehensive understanding of her own sexuality, sense of self and place in a community. The work extends from the long-standing practice of drawing, refined through an architectural lens, and re-directed to a responsive, yet abstracted, self-representation.  Through process and material emerge countless studies that strive to expose facets of this splintering self and start to mend through a symbiotic artistic expression.  She is currently applying to various art residencies and fellowships while also maintaining her lead designer position at a New York City architecture firm.

Danika Druttman runs the art program at the Roger Smith, and comments “From a selection of excellent applications we were particularly inspired by Megan’s proposal because of the immersive scope of her work. She addressed the space it its entirety, with a vision that went beyond adding to the lobby, but truly transforming it. We are thrilled to award Megan with this opportunity to do a residency at Vermont Studio Center and looking forward to having Megan take over the Roger Smith’s lobby in the Fall!”
