Hunter Potter is the recipient of the 2018 Roger Smith Fellowship. It is awarded to a New York based artist of outstanding potential, it includes a one month residency at Vermont Studio Center and a show in the lobby at Roger Smith.
Hunter Potter, painter, was born in Syracuse, NY, in 1990. Despite having formally studied studio art at the University of Vermont and graduating in 2013, he accredits much of his artistic knowledge and education to the periods he spent working as a studio assistant for Takashi Murakami and apprenticing for Colossal Media as a traditional billboard painter from 2015 to 2017. Having left these commercial opportunities behind to pursue fine art on a full time basis, Potter currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
I paint to immortalize and elaborate upon the otherwise fleeting details of everyday life. I capture these microscopic triumphs and tragedies on canvas to give them the recognition that I feel they deserve. The resulting paintings transcend my own existence to act as a catalyst for the viewing audience, stepping-stones for conversation, nostalgia, and comparison amongst strangers.
The Vermont Studio Center was founded by artists in 1984. Our location–situated along the banks of the Gihon River in the historic village of Johnson, Vermont was chosen with the intention of fostering creativity through community, collaboration, and quiet reflection supported by the unspoiled beauty of the northern Green Mountains. Over the last 30 years, VSC has grown to become the largest international artists’ and writers’ residency program in the United States. Our mission is to provide studio residencies in an inclusive, international community, honoring creative work as the communication of spirit through form.
