The Roger Smith Hotel is delighted to present ‘Where Breukelen At?’, a site specific work by Brooklyn based cartoonist Jeremy Nguyen.

Brooklyn and New York are never ending sources of humor. It’s people are nuanced and its spaces are varied. It is its own culture and my work is an anthropological study of its ridiculousness. “Stranger Than Bushwick” is a collection of work by Nguyen which explores the broad and the minutiae of living in Brooklyn’s ‘coolest neighborhood’ that is universal among inhabitants of any emerging city for young people around the world.

About the work:

Movement and form is the core of a character. When many characters come together in a piece, relationships form. The Herringbones are a people with a non-sensical culture. They are curious, uncomfortable, and discovering their bodies and the world around them as if for the first time. They aren’t much different than a 20-year old who has just moved to Brooklyn.

The phrase “Where Breukelen At?” is a play off of the Biggie Smalls/Tupac song “Where Brooklyn At?”. The original lyrics were to hype a crowd at a concert, chanted repeatedly in the chorus. By using the original Dutch name ‘Breukelen’, I wanted to explore the actual question that many New Yorkers and Brooklynites have about their disappearing city.
